Care Done by Hand

Getting out of bed takes about ten seconds longer than it used to. You sit on the edge for a moment and wait for the back to come back to you. After a while you stop noticing that you do it.
By four in the afternoon the shoulders have climbed again. The scan came back clean. The medication buys three good days and then the fourth one arrives.
The sore spot is rarely where it started
A body is quick about this. Give it a sore spot and it will have a way around it inside a week: a slightly shorter step on one side, a shoulder that quits fifteen degrees early, a hip that always takes the stairs first, a way of twisting toward the passenger seat that uses the neck instead of the ribs. None of it is a decision. Run that for a year and the part carrying the extra load is often worse off than the part that hurt first.
Most people come in around then.
Care done by hand

The word is Greek. Cheir, hand. Praktikos, done. No drugs and no injections. The spine and the joints get worked on directly, with hands.
In 1895, in Davenport, Iowa, D. D. Palmer adjusted a single segment of a man's upper back. Two years later he opened a school.
The idea underneath it stays simple. The spine is the corridor the nerves run through. Narrow it or stiffen it and the body lets you know, in the only way it can, which is pain and tightness. Open the corridor and a good deal of the rest takes care of itself.

In Washington State, you can come straight in. No referral, and that holds for auto and work injuries too.

Diagnosis, not just adjustment
People ask me this on the phone quite a bit: do I need to see someone else first? You don't. In Washington the word written into the law is diagnosis, not just adjustment. Working out what's actually going on is part of what this license is for, so that's where we start. X-rays if we need them, then the adjustment, the extremity and soft tissue work, traction, the exercises, and a look at how you're eating. What your spine and joints need sits in one room, under one license. Which mostly means you get to tell me the whole thing on the first day, instead of telling a quarter of it to four different people.
The Fountainhead
It was the first one in the world, and the profession still calls it the Fountainhead. Most of the early chiropractic colleges in America were founded by its graduates. More than a third of every chiropractor practicing in the United States today came out of Palmer, and one in five students studying chiropractic right now is there. Its research center is the largest and most heavily funded in the field.
What that means on a table is hands. Palmer is a technique school before it is anything else. Four years with your fingers on other people's spines, hunting for the one segment that isn't moving, and being corrected out loud when you're wrong. Imaging tells you a great deal. It still can't tell you how a joint feels at the end of its range. That only gets built by repetition, standing next to someone who has done it for thirty years.
I trained there.

Rarely the whole story
Levitas is Latin for lightness. What we're after is that moment on the way out when the body just moves, without having to be coaxed into it.
The order matters. Pain comes down first, because nothing else is available while it's loud. You can't ask a body to learn a new pattern while it's busy defending itself. Then comes what sits under it: the soft tissue, and the movement habit that let the whole thing happen. That part is slower and much less dramatic, and it's where most people never arrive, because the pain lifted and the visits stopped. After that the work is holding onto it. Bodies drift back toward what they know. Looking in from time to time is how you catch the drift before it turns back into one of those mornings.
A sore back is rarely only a back. How you breathe, and how many hours a day the chair has you. Pain is what a body says when something upstream stopped working, and the healing itself is the body's. Clearing what's in the way is our part.
"For twelve years in Korea I worked with all kinds of people. Athletes, surgeons who stand all day, office workers, patients in their eighties. Very different bodies, and the same lesson every time. Getting someone moving well again lasts a lot longer than taking their pain away."
We take the time
Most clinics bill the insurer directly, which hands the insurer the decision about how long a visit runs. We don't do that, so how long we spend with you is ours to decide.
One doctor from the handshake to the door. One patient in the building at a time. You see your own findings on the screen and hear why the sore spot ended up where it did. Hands are where the work starts, and breathing and movement come with it. Korean or English, and the paperwork exists in both.
If you have insurance, you'll get a superbill after your visit, an itemized receipt. You can send it in yourself, or leave it with us and we'll mail it for you. What comes back depends on your plan. Auto injury and work injury we bill directly.
Here a long time
I want to be here a long time. The kind of office that ages along with the neighborhood. Someone comes in for a shoulder, a year later brings their mother, and a few years after that their son is the one on the table. That's the version of this I'm working toward.
Which is why nobody gets moved along quickly here. When you tell me your back has been like this for six years, I want to hear about the six years, not just about today. Most of the answer is usually somewhere in there.
Thank you for reading this far. It's longer than most clinic pages, and that was deliberate. I'd rather you walk in already knowing how I work than find out once you're on the table.
We're on Edmonds Way. If the morning at the top of this page sounded like yours, come in and let me have a look. Korean or English, whichever is easier. And bring the six years with you.
