The first time I stood there
A brick sign. A date on it: 1897.
July 2019, Davenport, Iowa. I had looked at this campus a hundred times on a phone screen. That summer I finally walked onto it, my daughter on my hip, to see the college where chiropractic began.
A large renovation went through the campus while I was a student. Most of what you see here no longer looks this way, which is part of why I wanted to write it down.
Two days, one road ·
I was thirty-five when I started all this, and the biggest part of it was English. I had learned it in college in Korea and then let it go, sure I would never need it again. By the time we reached Indiana, almost none of it was left. So I went back to the beginning, in a language course, and spent months there. None of it came easily. The day the course ended, we left.
Five hours to Chicago. Two and a half more to Davenport. Two days on the road with a two-year-old, and I was tired in the way that does not matter at all, because at the end of that road was the thing I had been staring at from the other side of the world.
A screen, then the real thing ·
In Korea I knew this school through its website, and through other people's blogs and Instagram posts. Standing under the red gate in front of the athletic center, I kept checking that it was real.
A portrait hangs over one stairwell: the man who gave the first chiropractic adjustment in 1895 and opened the school two years later. My first photo on campus was taken right under it. I am grinning. My daughter, in my arms, has no idea why.
Someone who made the time · 기꺼이 시간을 내준 선배
Our guide that day was a Korean upperclassman close to graduating, interning in the school clinic. He gave a whole afternoon to a family he had never met.
He walked us through building after building, then took me into the clinic and introduced me to his professor. The exam room had a blood pressure cuff on the wall and an eye chart by the sink. It was a room built for examining people before anyone touched them. I have not forgotten that afternoon.
Spines behind glass ·
Down one hallway stood a tall glass cabinet of spine specimens. Curved, fused at the joints, bent sideways, collapsed at a single level. No two alike.
Textbooks draw one clean spine. Nobody who walks into a treatment room has that one.
Where hands learn ·
Rows of adjusting tables, empty that day. Students take turns being each other's patient here, over and over, until the hands can feel what the eyes cannot see.
I spent twelve years in gyms in Seoul before this. I know what a room looks like when people come to it every day to get better at one thing. I stood in that doorway a long time.
Bought like a kid ·
The last stop was the bookstore. A rugby T-shirt, a water bottle, two anatomy workbooks for classes I had not started, and a small checked dress for my daughter. I grinned the whole way to the door.
I had no idea what the next four years would ask of us. I was simply happy.
Where I trained ·
It is strange to look at these photos from a treatment room in Edmonds. The campus in them has been rebuilt. The man in them had not yet sat a single exam.
The school is chiropractic education. People in this profession call it the Fountainhead, because chiropractic started there. By the college's own count, more than a third of the chiropractors practicing in the United States trained at Palmer.
The four years that followed looked nothing like that happy afternoon in the bookstore. Years of anatomy lab and X-ray reading rooms, then a clinic where a professor checked my work on every patient I saw.
I am proud of where I trained. Not because of the name on the diploma, but because of everything that place would not let me skip.
Every spine that comes into our room in Edmonds gets looked at the way I was taught there: examined before anyone touches it, one person at a time. The man in that first photo had no idea how much work was coming. I am glad he went anyway.
