One heel goes before the other. You find it on the shoe rack, months before your back says anything.
The rest is small and constant. The belt buckle has crept off center by lunchtime. A bag strap only ever slides off the left shoulder. Standing at the sink you have been loading the same leg for years, without once deciding to.
Some have had their legs measured before, face down on a table with the heels brought together, and got a short sentence about it. Most have never had anyone look at all. Either way, what that check is reaching for rarely gets explained.
Half a mile up the trail, one hip starts talking. Not pain exactly. A tightness that arrives at the same bend of the path every time.
A table with one short leg does not wobble at the leg
It wobbles at the far corner, where the coffee is. The fault is at one leg. The trouble shows up across the room.
Your pelvis is the floor the spine stands on, and when that floor tips, the spine is what leans to keep you upright. Vertebra by vertebra, a little rotation here to buy a little height there, until the whole column has quietly rearranged itself around the tilt.
Which is why the sore spot almost never sits on top of what caused it. It is also why a chiropractor asks about your legs when your neck is the thing keeping you awake.
Lying down, gravity is switched off
The heel check face down is not useless. But stand up and your own body weight rewrites the answer. So the image is taken standing, weight where it normally goes, and what gets read is the height of the two hip joints, left and right, where the thigh bone seats into the pelvis.
One of them sits lower. There are two reasons for that, and from the outside they are identical.
The first is a pelvis that turned. The bones are the same length they have always been. Lean a ladder against a wall and push its feet out a few inches. The ladder did not shrink, and the top of it is lower. That is what happens at the hip every time the pelvis tips.
The second is a femur that really is shorter. A growth plate that took a hit in childhood, or a fracture that healed a few millimeters short. Nobody's hands lengthen a bone, and that one is still there in ten years.
Get the two backwards and it is worse than doing nothing. Put a lift under a turned pelvis and you have built by hand the tilt you were trying to remove. Treat a genuinely short bone with adjustments alone and the correction keeps coming undone, because whatever is pushing it back has not been touched.
Sorting them is arithmetic
A pelvis turned a given way moves that hip by a known amount, and it does it consistently enough to run the sum backward. Measure the gap on the image. Subtract what the turning accounts for. What is left over is bone.
Two people can show the very same ten millimeters and leave with opposite answers. In one, the pelvis was hiding four of them and the real gap is fourteen. In the other, the pelvis was inventing four and the real gap is six, small enough that the body had been absorbing it quietly all along.
And now and then both hips read dead level with a difference still sitting underneath, covered by the turn.
The check on the table is where it starts, not where it ends. The number it gives has to be held up against the standing image before it means anything.
That number decides what happens next
Pain down first. Nothing useful is possible while it is loud.
Then the floor. The soft tissue and the movement habit underneath it. One bone, one direction.
Then keeping it. The work stops being repair and becomes holding what was rebuilt.
The contact is about the width of a thumb, and the push travels the single way that bone needs to go. Nothing else gets moved on the chance that something in there helps.
If the bone is genuinely short, the correction matters more rather than less, because that femur is what keeps knocking the pelvis back out of level. A lift does not stand in for the correction. It stops the pelvis from being tilted the second you stand up, which is what finally gives the correction somewhere to hold. We do not make lifts here. What you leave with is the exact number the arithmetic left over and where to take it, so that nobody is fitting it by eye. And when the leftover is small, nothing goes in the shoe.
Some of you have been adjusted somewhere already, felt better for a few days, and watched the same side flare again. That pattern is rarely a treatment that failed. Usually it is a floor nobody measured. Some of you have never been on a table at all, and have simply built a life around it. Shifting your weight. Buying the insole. Waiting to see whether it settles on its own.
Pain is part of being alive. Losing the trail is not.
Come in. One standing image, and we find out which of the two you are. If the answer is that you need very little, I will say so plainly. Wear the shoes you actually wear. The heels say more than most people expect.
