The scan answered a different question
Checking your blind spot before a lane change. Your head gets partway there, and your shoulders turn the rest of the way for you.
A lot of people who come to us know that moment well. Here's how they usually put it: "The X-ray says nothing's broken. The MRI says the discs are fine. So why does my neck still feel locked, like I can't trust it to turn?"
Often it started with a rear-end collision at a red light, months ago. Sometimes it's an ankle that rolled on a trail, or a low back after a lift that went wrong. The scans come back clean. The stiffness stays.
If you've been told "there's nothing wrong," you probably walked out relieved and a little lost at the same time. Relieved, because nothing is broken. Lost, because something clearly still isn't right.
You're not imagining it. The scan simply answered a different question than the one you were asking.
Hardware fixed, software stuck
Think of a phone with a cracked screen. The repair shop replaces the glass and it looks brand new. Then you turn it on and it freezes. Apps lag, and the screen doesn't respond where you tap.
The glass was never the whole problem.
X-rays and MRIs look at the hardware: bone and ligament. They're very good at that. What they can't show is the software, meaning the nervous system that decides when a muscle fires, how hard, and how much the brain trusts the joint underneath it.
Your neck is full of sensors
Turn your phone sideways and the screen turns with it. A tiny motion sensor inside is keeping track. Your neck does the same job, with far more sensors.
Two kinds matter most here. The first sits in the joint capsule, the thin sleeve wrapped around each small joint of the spine. These sensors, called mechanoreceptors, report pressure and angle, a bit like a door hinge that could tell you exactly how far it's open. The second kind sits inside the muscles. Muscle spindles work like tiny tape measures, reporting how long a muscle is and how fast that length is changing.
The small muscles at the very top of the neck, just under the skull, are among the most sensor-dense muscles in the body. Strength isn't their main job. Their main job is telling your brain where your head is.
Your brain blends those reports with what your eyes see and what the balance organ in your inner ear feels. That blending is called sensorimotor integration. Think of your car's GPS, which combines satellite signals with the car's own speed and direction to put one blue dot on the map. If one of those feeds starts sending bad numbers, the dot drifts, and you end up turning down the wrong street.
Here's one place that drift shows up. Sit with your eyes closed, turn your head all the way to one side, then bring it back to what feels like dead center. People who've had a whiplash injury tend to miss center by more than people who haven't. The neck moved fine. The blue dot was in the wrong place.
Safe mode: the dimmer in your spinal cord
When you get hurt, those sensors start sending loud, messy signals. A little swelling in the joint can be enough to set them off.
Those signals travel into the spinal cord, and something important happens there. The spinal cord has its own brake cells. When an alarm comes in from an injured joint, they turn down the nerve cells that drive the muscles around it. Picture a dimmer switch on a light. The bulb is fine and the wiring is intact. Someone has simply turned the knob down.
Researchers call this arthrogenic muscle inhibition, which means a muscle held back because of the joint. We just call it safe mode. It exists to protect you, keeping you from putting too much load on a hurt joint while it heals.
Here's what often goes unexplained. The muscle itself isn't damaged. However hard you try to tighten it, the signal still arrives turned down. That's also why jumping straight into heavy strengthening can backfire at this stage. The dimmed muscle stays quiet, the neighboring muscles take over the work, and they're the ones that get stronger.
In the first few weeks, safe mode protects you. The trouble is that it often stays on long after the tissue has healed. The brain learned a way of moving while it was under threat, and it keeps using it.
The map in your brain gets smudged
The strip of brain that sends out movement commands, the motor cortex, is laid out a bit like a piano keyboard. Each muscle has its own key. Press the key, and that muscle moves.
When pain keeps coming back, that keyboard starts to change. In people with recurring low back pain, researchers found that the key for a deep core muscle had shifted from its usual spot. Neighboring keys can also blur together. You reach for one note and the one beside it sounds too. That goes a long way toward explaining why movement starts to feel clumsy.
The keys can also get harder to press. In people whose ankle kept giving way after a sprain, the brain needed a stronger push to switch on the muscles that guard the ankle. That showed up on the uninjured side too. When the ankle that was never hurt changes as well, the problem isn't only in the ankle. It's also in the brain that runs both.
A smoke alarm that goes off for toast
Deep in the brain is a small almond-shaped area called the amygdala. It works like a smoke alarm for danger. After a painful injury, that alarm can end up set too sensitive. It starts going off for toast.
Before you even turn your head, your brain predicts how it will feel. If the prediction is "this is going to hurt," it braces first, tightening the muscles in front of and behind the neck at the same time. That's like pressing the gas and the brake together. You don't go anywhere. You just burn fuel.
That bracing is the stiff neck you wake up with. It's also the ankle you don't quite trust on the stairs.
Pain that lingers after healing is often protection that never got switched off.
What an adjustment actually does
A lot of people picture chiropractic as bone-cracking, or a firm massage with a pop at the end. The real purpose is something else.
An adjustment isn't about shoving a bone back into place. It's about the signal.
Think back to those sensors. When one segment of the spine stops moving the way it should, its sensors keep sending a distorted report. The blue dot drifts, and the brain ends up working from a bad map.
An adjustment is a quick, short push delivered to that one segment. The speed is deliberate. Many of these sensors respond to how fast something changes, not to steady pressure. It's the same reason you stop noticing your socks a few minutes after putting them on. Your skin gets used to constant, gentle contact. A sudden tap, it notices.
A quick, precise push makes those sensors fire together, sending one clear, strong signal up in place of the noise. It's a little like holding down the power button on a frozen phone. The system restarts and gets a fresh look at what's going on.
The pop some people expect is gas being released inside the joint, the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles. It isn't the goal, and it's not how we judge whether an adjustment did its job.
Installing the update
A restart clears the freeze. It doesn't install anything new.
Why practice has to follow
The brain rewires itself through repetition. Nerve cells that keep signaling together build a stronger connection over time. That ability is called neuroplasticity, and it works in both directions. It's how the brain learned to brace in the first place. It's also how it learns to let go.
Think of a path worn across a grassy field. Walk the same line enough times and it becomes the trail everyone uses. The old, braced pattern is that worn trail. A new path only appears after you walk it many times. Stop too soon, and the first time you're tired or distracted, your feet drift back to the old one.
movement and stability training: the blueprint you were born with
movement and stability training:
The movement work we use is movement and stability training, or movement and stability training. It's built on the way every baby learns to move in the first year of life: breathing into the belly, then pushing up onto hands and knees. Nobody teaches a baby this. The blueprint is already in the nervous system, and it's still in yours.
저희가 쓰는 운동 방법은 movement and stability training(movement and stability training), 동적 신경근 안정화 훈련입니다.
Much of it centers on the diaphragm, the dome-shaped muscle under your ribs. It does more than help you breathe. Working with the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, it builds steady pressure inside the trunk. Think of an unopened soda can. Sealed, it's surprisingly hard to crush. Opened, it folds easily. That inside pressure keeps the spine steady without the neck and back muscles having to clamp down.
movement and stability training uses positions from that developmental sequence to wake up these deep stabilizers and teach the brain to use them again. Once the brain has a better option, it no longer needs to brace.
Putting it in order
We start by getting the pain down, because nothing sticks while it's loud. Then comes the adjustment. We work in the Gonstead system: we find the one segment that isn't moving, by hand and by watching you move, and adjust only that one, in the direction it's stuck. That clears some of the noise and gives the dimmed muscles a better chance to switch back on. While the body is in that state, we retrain the movement pattern underneath, so it holds even when you're not thinking about it. After that, the work is keeping what you've rebuilt.
The adjustment opens the door. The movement work is how you walk through it.
If your scans came back clean and your body still doesn't feel like yours, come see us. We'll look at how you move, not only where it hurts. If it's something another specialist should look at, we'll tell you that honestly.
Wear clothes you can move in, and if you have imaging reports from after the injury, bring them along. Auto-injury (PIP) and work-injury (L&I) cases are accepted.
Thanks for reading. When you're ready, book a consultation, and we'll start with how your neck moves.
