The First Cold of the School Year Is Not Random

Quick answer ·
Rhinovirus is climbing across the country right now, and the CDC calls that expected for early September. In children under five it does not always stop at a runny nose. Wheezing, and sometimes croup, come with it.
The pattern has a date on it. Hospital admissions for childhood asthma spike in the third week of September, every year, in country after country.
Why does the whole house get sick two weeks after school starts?
Hi, this is Levitas Chiropractic & Wellness in Edmonds. Here is a question that comes up in the room every September. "We were fine all summer. Why now?"
Nothing changed about the child. What changed is the room. Twenty-some kids, one door handle, one bathroom tap, one shared table where the crayons live. Children pick up more colds than adults do to begin with — roughly six to ten a year, against two to four for a grown-up — and then in one week of late August we put all of them in the same box.
The virus did not get stronger. The distance got shorter.
What is the third week of September actually about?
This is the part most parents have never been told, and it is the most useful thing in this piece.
Researchers tracking Canadian hospital records from 1990 to 2004 found the same peak in childhood asthma admissions in week 38 — September 17 to 23 — in almost every single year. The peak lined up with school return after summer vacation. Data from Sweden and the United Kingdom showed it too.
The order of who gets hit is what gives the game away. School-age children first, preschoolers next, then adults — the shape of something being carried home from a classroom and handed down. Rhinovirus is considered the likely trigger. Around a quarter of all childhood asthma hospital stays in a year happen in this one month. The third week of September has a name in that world: Asthma Peak Week.
Asthma Peak Week.
There is one more piece of evidence, and it arrived by accident. In 2020, schools closed. The September spike flattened that year, which pointed straight back at viral exposure as the driver.
So is it the virus, or is it the room?
Both, and that is the whole point of how we look at illness here.
There is an old framework in infectious disease called the Triad of Health. Three corners. The agent is the germ itself. The environment is everything around the person that decides whether the germ ever reaches them. The host is the person, and how much they can absorb when it does.
Our first Clinic Notes was about Semmelweis and handwashing. That was the agent corner. The second was about measles. Also the agent corner. September is the month the middle corner does all the work.
A classroom is not a medical problem. It is a room with a specific contact density, and that density has a number attached to it in the hospital data every autumn.
What can a parent actually change?
Handwashing helps, and it helps less than people hope. That is an honest reading of the evidence. A systematic review found hand hygiene programs reduced the number of people getting respiratory infections by about 16 percent, though the studies varied a great deal. A large trial across 68 New Zealand primary schools added classroom hand sanitiser and measured illness absence against usual hygiene. It found no reduction. Spanish and Chinese school trials found meaningful drops in absence. So: worth doing, not a wall.
The thing worth marking on a calendar is different. If your child has ever wheezed with a cold, the two weeks after school starts are the two weeks to pay attention. Not because something is wrong. Because that is when the data says it shows up.
And know the sounds. A barking cough like a seal is croup. A high whistle on the way in, chest sucking in between the ribs, a change in lip colour — that is not a cold anymore, and it is an emergency room, not a phone call in the morning.
🍵 Barley tea · 보리차
None of this shortens the virus. It makes the week easier to get through.
Do you know barley tea? In Korean homes it is not tea in the way Americans mean it. It is what comes out of the fridge when a child asks for water. Roasted barley, boiled, drunk warm in winter and cold in summer, all year, by everyone in the house. No caffeine, no sugar, faintly nutty. Families kept a pot of it going partly because boiled water was safe water, and the habit outlived the reason.
Why it works for a sick kid. A coughing child needs fluid and will not drink plain water. Barley tea is warm, it tastes like something, and there is nothing in it to keep them up at night. Thin mucus moves. Thick mucus sits.
How. Boxed teabags at H Mart on Highway 99, or in the tea aisle of most Edmonds grocery stores now. One bag in a pot, simmer a few minutes, keep it on the counter and refill the cup all day.
Where does chiropractic sit in this?
The agent corner already has people on it. Vaccines and your pediatrician hold that side. Soap and a sink cover much of the environment corner.
We work on the host corner, and the idea there is more than a century old. The body heals itself. A cut closes without instruction. A fever runs and breaks. Chiropractors call that innate intelligence, and the whole of our work rests on taking it seriously — that health is something the body produces, not something we hand to it.
That intelligence runs through the nervous system, and the nervous system runs through a spine that moves or does not. Where the structure interferes, the message arrives late or thin. Our job is to find that interference and take it out of the way.
In September that shows up in a specific place. A ribcage gone stiff. An upper back that stops a breath halfway. A child who has coughed for nine days and moved the work of breathing up into the neck and shoulders, so the body stays braced at the hour it should be settling.
We are not adding healing to a child. It is already in there. We clear the path it travels.
The instrument ·
Most people picture chiropractic as a twist and a pop. With children we usually reach for something else — a small spring-loaded instrument the length of a finger, with a soft rubber tip. It delivers one quick, shallow, measured impulse into a single joint. No twisting, no leaning, no cracking sound. The force is set by a spring rather than by how hard someone pushes, so the same amount arrives every time.
Children usually say it feels like a tap.
FAQ
Q. My child gets a cold every single month. Is something wrong with their immune system?
Usually not. Six to ten colds a year is the ordinary range for a child, and preschool-age children in group care sit at the high end of it. But if fevers keep returning and growth starts to lag, or if infections need hospital care, please see your pediatrician.
Q. Is the September asthma peak real, or is it just allergy season?
Both are in the room. The timing argues for the virus. The peak tracks the date children go back to school rather than a fixed calendar week, and it fell apart the year schools were closed.
Q. Should I keep my child home for a cold?
For a plain runny nose most families cannot, and most schools do not expect it. Fever, or a cough that is stopping the child from sleeping, is the line worth holding. Think back to the order we saw earlier. The school-age child catches it first, brings it home, and passes it to a younger brother or sister — who tends to get hit harder.
Q. Can chiropractic keep my child from catching a cold?
Catching it is the other two corners' work, and vaccines and handwashing earn their keep there. Ours is the child underneath. We look at the ribs and every joint of the upper back, checking that nothing there is getting in the way of a full breath, and helping those joints move the way they should. The healing belongs to the body. We clear the path.
If your child has come through a long cough and still seems to be breathing high in the chest, or their posture has shifted since school started, it is worth a look.
Bring the backpack they actually carry, loaded the way they carry it.
