Why "sit up straight" never lasts
Any parent who has corrected a child's posture knows this. The back straightens while you are saying it. Thirty seconds later, it is back.
The child is not being lazy. Their body does not yet know how to build that position.
Good posture is not something you hold
We treat posture as a muscle problem. Weak back, no core. So we say "tighten up," "straighten your back."
But a posture held by effort cannot last, because holding costs energy. A child manages about thirty seconds and lets go. That is normal.
Real posture stands on its own when the inside is full.
The unopened can
An unopened soda can will hold an adult standing on it. Open it, let the pressure out, and one finger crushes it.
The aluminum never got thinner. Only the pressure inside changed.
Your child's trunk is built the same way. The lid is the diaphragm, the walls are the abdominal wall, the base is the pelvic floor. And the lumbar spine runs right along the back wall of that container.
When the container is empty, the back wall has to hold everything alone. So the body finds the easiest way — tip the pelvis forward, arch the back, and hang on the bones. That shape is what we call "poor posture."
So we start with the breath
Breathe in and the diaphragm drops, raising the pressure inside. As pressure fills, the lumbar curve flattens — the ribs come down and the symphysis pubis rises toward them.
Those two are the ends where the abdominals attach. Bring the ends together and the abdominals contract on their own — not from squeezing, but because their anchors moved closer.
That is why "tighten your stomach" does not work. Squeezing the walls is not the same as filling the container.
Especially for these children
A pelvis that tips forward. Anterior pelvic tilt — belly forward, hips back. This practice moves the body in exactly the opposite direction.
An active child. The more twisting, bending and stretching, the more it matters whether the lumbar joints carry that force alone or share it with the pressure inside. The better the athlete, the more they need a baseline to return to.
Try it at home
Lie your child on their back, knees bent and touching, feet flat.
Have them slide a hand under the lower back. How much space is there? That is the starting point.
Hand out. Breathe in slowly through the nose — the belly rises, not the chest. When it is full, hold the breath there and press the low back into the floor while you count to three.
Slide the hand back under. Less of it fits.
That difference, felt by the child's own hand, is the whole point.
Not fixing something. Putting it in early.
Most children have nothing wrong. That is exactly why this is the right time. A sense that takes an adult weeks to recover, a child can often find in one visit.
Which segment is stiff, and what pattern the body defaults to, cannot be read off a page. That is found with hands on the spine, in the room, together.
