This is the second of two parts.
Twelve years as a trainer in Seoul, six of them running my own gym, and one question I could not answer: I could make almost anyone stronger, but I could not always make them better. So my wife, our two-year-old daughter and I got on a plane to Iowa.
At the Fountainhead ·
Davenport in winter is not a glamorous place. A river town, red brick, wind off the Mississippi. We arrived with suitcases and a child who did not yet speak English, and for a while the whole thing felt considerably larger than we were.
What I found there was not what I had gone looking for. I had expected to learn techniques. What I got was four years of anatomy, neurology, imaging, examination and diagnosis — and a faculty that cared far more about whether I could justify a decision than whether I could perform a manoeuvre.
And then there was the sentence. D.D. Palmer taught that what disturbs the spine comes from three places: trauma, toxins, and thought.
Thought.
생각.
After twelve years of watching stress arrive in someone's shoulders long before it ever arrived in their words, that one could not simply be passed over. It reframed the question I had carried across the ocean. I had been asking why exercise sometimes failed. The better question was what else was in the room.
I graduated in February 2024.
The years in between · 배우는 것과 낫게 하는 것
Before this clinic there were the associate years — full days of patients, in a practice that was not mine. That is where I learned the distance between passing an examination and actually helping the person sitting in front of you.
I studied hands-on soft-tissue care and movement and stability training in that stretch. Not to collect letters after my name, but because they finally answered the question I had carried out of the gym: how do you create a change that is still there after the patient walks out the door?
그 시기에 hands-on soft-tissue care와 movement and stability training를 공부했습니다.
The adjustment opens the door. What you do with your own body decides whether it stays open.
Why Edmonds ·
We looked across a great deal of this region before we signed anything. Edmonds is where we stopped looking. Water on one side, mountains on the other, and a town still small enough that people remember each other's names.
Levitas is Latin for lightness — the word for what a body feels like when it is finally allowed to move the way it was built to move.
That is the name on the door, and it is also the only result I am interested in.
What I promise ·
I will look at the whole system before I put a hand on anything. I will explain what I find in words you can repeat to your family over dinner. And I will always send you home with something to do yourself, because the change that lasts is the change you make.
If what you have is outside what I can help with, I will tell you that plainly and point you to the right person. That is part of the job, not a failure of it.
Twelve years on a gym floor taught me that. Palmer gave me the anatomy to explain it. This room in Edmonds is where the two finally meet.
Thank you for reading this far — both parts of it.
