Why Am I This Tired When I Haven't Done Anything?

Why Am I This Tired When I Haven't Done Anything?

Quick answer ·

Tired all day, wide awake at night? Meet your autonomic nervous system, why its wiring runs along your spine, and one breath to try tonight.

You slept. You haven't run anywhere. And by ten in the morning you already feel like you've worked a full day. The reason often lives in a part of you that never clocks out.

Think about this morning. You woke up and your heart was already going. You didn't start it. You didn't set the pace. Somewhere between the alarm clock and your first cup of coffee, your pupils narrowed against the light, your stomach started on last night's dinner, and your blood pressure rose just enough to keep you from getting dizzy when you stood up. Nobody asked you about any of it.

That quiet crew has a name: the autonomic nervous system. "Autonomic" just means automatic. It's the part of your nervous system that runs the body while you're busy living in it.

Try to slow your heart down just by thinking about it. Try to make your stomach digest faster. You can't, not directly. Now lift your hand. Easy.

Lifting your hand is a job for the nerves you control. Heartbeat, digestion, sweat, the size of your pupils: those belong to the autonomic side. It works like the building manager of an apartment complex. You never see him, but the heat comes on, the water runs, and the hallway lights turn on when it gets dark.

You only notice the manager when something stops working.

Step 1. Alarm Mode and Rest Mode

The autonomic system works in two modes.

The sympathetic side is alarm mode. Picture your ancestor turning a corner and finding a tiger. In a split second the heart pounds, the airways open wide, the pupils grow to let in more light, and blood rushes to the legs. Digestion stops cold. Why digest lunch when you might be lunch? This is the "fight or flight" response, and it has kept people alive for a very long time.

The parasympathetic side is rest mode. It takes over when you feel safe. The heart settles, the stomach gets back to work, saliva flows, and the body starts repairing what the day wore down. That heavy, pleasant feeling after a warm Sunday lunch is rest mode doing its job.

Here's the part most people don't know. Rest mode is quietly on right now, even as you read this. Left completely alone, your heart's built-in pacemaker would run at around 100 beats a minute. Your resting pulse sits lower because the vagus nerve keeps gently slowing it down, every second of the day.

So this isn't an on/off switch. Both modes are always a little on, and the body keeps turning one up and the other down all day. That shift happening smoothly is what health looks like.

Step 2. Where the Wiring Runs

Gray's Anatomy (1918) map of the autonomic nervous system, alarm mode in orange and rest mode in blue

Every building has a wiring shaft, a column where the cables run floor to floor. Your body has one too. It's your spine.

Alarm mode leaves the spinal cord from the mid-back to the upper low back, roughly T1 through L2. From there the nerves pass a chain of relay stations sitting right alongside the spine before heading out to the heart, lungs, gut and blood vessels.

Rest mode comes from the two ends. At the top, four cranial nerves carry it: III (oculomotor) narrows the pupils, VII (facial) keeps tears and saliva flowing, IX (glossopharyngeal) adds more saliva, and X (vagus) travels all the way down to the heart, lungs and most of the gut. At the bottom, S2–S4 look after the bladder, the lower bowel and the pelvic organs.

III(oculomotor)은 눈동자를 작게 하고, VII(facial)은 눈물과 침이 돌게 하고, IX(glossopharyngeal)도 침을 보태요.

I spent more than twelve years as a rehabilitation trainer before I became a chiropractor, and one thing kept showing up: people who carried their stress in their upper back and neck usually carried it in their sleep and their stomach too. At the time I didn't have the map. Now I do. The same column that holds you upright is the one the wiring runs through. That's why a chiropractor pays attention to it.

Step 3. Why a Chiropractor Cares

Chiropractor resting his hands on a seated patient's upper back

When chiropractic began in 1895, its founders gave a name to everything you've read so far: innate intelligence. The idea was simple. Your body already knows how to run itself, how to close a cut and slow a racing heart, and it does that work through the nervous system. The chiropractor's job was never to add something from outside. It was to clear the way so the body could do what it already knows.

Today we'd use different words. Physiologists call it self-regulation, and the autonomic nervous system sits at the center of it. The name is old. The observation still holds: your body does an enormous amount of work without you, and it does that work through nerves.

So why an adjustment? Every joint in your spine is packed with sensors that report to the spinal cord how it's moving. When a segment stops moving well, that report changes. And it lands in the same stretch of spinal cord where alarm-mode nerves leave, T1 to L2, while the upper neck sits just below the spot where the vagus nerve leaves the skull. Researchers call these links somato-autonomic reflexes: what happens in the body's frame can nudge what the autonomic system does.

An adjustment gives a stuck segment its motion back, and that changes what those sensors report. Studies have measured shifts in heart-rate patterns after spinal adjustments. The research is still growing, and the changes seen so far tend to be short-term. What we can say is this: a spine that moves well sends your nervous system clearer information, and that gives your body's own regulation a better place to work from.

That's the heart of what we do. We find where the frame has stopped moving and give it back its motion. The body takes it from there.

Step 4. Signs to Notice

Patient lying face down on an adjusting table while the chiropractor places his hands on her upper back

Modern life rarely sends a tiger. It sends a deadline, a traffic jam, a phone that buzzes at 11 p.m. The body can't tell the difference. It sounds the alarm either way, and when the tigers never stop coming, the alarm stops switching off.

Some signs the alarm may be stuck on:

  • You're exhausted at night, but the moment your head hits the pillow your mind switches on.

  • You eat and it sits in your stomach like a stone.

  • Your shoulders are up near your ears and you only notice when someone points it out.

  • You catch yourself clenching your jaw or holding your breath at the computer.

None of these is a diagnosis. They're signs worth a look. And if a racing heart ever comes with chest pain or fainting, that's an emergency, not a sign. Call 911 first.

Step 5. One Thing to Try Tonight

There's one handle on this system you can reach on purpose: your breath.

Tonight, lying in bed, breathe in through your nose for a slow count of four. Then let it out through your mouth for a count of six, like fogging up a cold window. Keep the out-breath longer than the in-breath. Do it for a few minutes. Don't force it.

A longer out-breath helps the vagus nerve turn rest mode up. Research on slow breathing shows it can shift heart rhythm toward the calmer, rest-mode pattern. It won't undo years of a stuck alarm in one night. It does remind your body how to settle.

Next time: alarm mode, up close. Why does stress make your hands cold and your neck tight? Part 2 is all about the sympathetic side.

A note from me

Most of the people I see don't come in talking about their nervous system. They come in because their neck won't turn or their back tightens up every afternoon. But when we talk longer, the same things come up: bad sleep, a stomach that's always a little off, a feeling that they can't quite come down. That's worth a look. If it sounds familiar, come in and we'll look at the whole picture together. Clothes you can move in are all you need.
