Hi, this is Levitas Chiropractic & Wellness in Edmonds.
Someone has probably told you your posture is bad. A parent said it, or a coworker, or you caught yourself sideways in a shop window and did not enjoy it much. You have probably never had a chance to find out how much, where, or why.
This is exactly the part we do not want to miss, and it is why we start not with the eye but with software built for the job, evaluating and recording from the very beginning. We record the front and the side as you naturally stand. The software then measures how far each landmark sits off a vertical line, in millimetres of distance and in degrees of angle.
Why a few millimetres matter
Think about a bowling ball. Hold it against your chest and you can stand there a while. Hold the same ball out at arm's length and you tire quickly, and your shoulder starts asking other muscles and joints for help just to keep you upright. The weight of the ball did not change at all. Only the distance did.
Your head weighs about as much as that ball, and it sits at the top of a stack that is supposed to hold itself up for free. When the parts line up, bone rests on bone and the muscles get to idle. When one piece drifts off that line, muscle has to hold it there instead, all day, quietly, whether or not you can feel it.
Muscle that never gets to rest shortens and stiffens. Muscle that is no longer needed switches off. That trade goes on for months without announcing itself, and the wear lands on joints that were never meant to carry it. Which is why the ache usually turns up somewhere other than the part that is actually off.
Five millimetres can feel like nothing. But to a body that has to hold you upright and balanced all day, five millimetres can be hard labour to carry alone, like holding a bowling ball out at arm's length.
The line we are looking for
From the front, the vertebrae are meant to stack straight. From the side they are not. A healthy spine carries three gentle curves when you look at it sideways, one at the neck, one behind the ribs, one at the small of the back, and those curves are the reason the shock of walking does not travel straight up into your skull.
You were not born with them. A newborn's spine is one long C, and the rest arrive over the first year as the muscles get strong enough to lift the head, then sit, then stand. They were earned by movement, and they are kept the same way.
When those curves are doing their job, a vertical line dropped through a standing body passes just in front of the shoulder, just behind the hip, just in front of the knee, and a little in front of the ankle bone. That is the line the numbers are measured from.
Why we measure it instead of eyeballing it
Have you ever stood in an exam room while someone looked you over, moved you around a bit, and then told you what was wrong? And wondered, quietly, how much of that was measurement and how much was impression?
It is a fair thing to wonder, and the answer is not flattering to eyes in general. Ours included. A trained eye catches a lot. What it cannot do is remember.
A record that grows more useful every time you come back.
Each exam is kept, and they stack. Instead of relying on memory or on somebody's eye, we sit down and look at the data together and find the parts that need attention.
A shorter exam, with more detail rather than less.
Long assessments are tiring and uncomfortable. Because we already know which side to begin on and which movements deserve the attention, the exam gets shorter while the detail goes up, which saves you time and makes the visit worth more.
Clinics around the world run the same software, chiropractic and physical therapy practices among them. The measurement method behind it is patented.
What the data is for
The data tells us which parts deserve a closer look. If the side shot says your head sits well forward of your shoulders, we already know which tissues have been working overtime before we touch you, and we know which movements to test first.
It also leaves a fixed thing to compare against later, which is worth more than it sounds. Think about it for a moment. Can you remember how you were standing last spring? The data becomes a guide for where the care should go.
When you come in
When the posture screen starts, almost everyone feels the urge to fix their posture. That happens to just about everybody, and it is a natural reaction. Take a breath, let yourself settle, and just stand the way that is comfortable for you.
What we are looking for is the way you were standing in front of the bathroom mirror this morning, without giving it a thought.
Wear something you can move in, and something we can read your shoulder and hip line through. And bring the shoes you actually wear. The pair you reach for every day has been keeping its own record of how you have been standing, all this time, alongside you. We would like to read and hear all of it with you, every small piece.
A light exam that gathers each small, valuable piece of information. Let it be the first step, taken together, toward carrying less.
Unburden your body. Restore your potential.
